Tree Farm Quilt
BRING TO CLASS:
A sewing machine that is in good working order
80/12 needle already in your machine
Quarter-inch quilting foot (preferably one with a bladed guide on the right)
Rotary cutter with a sharp fresh blade
min.12” long ruler for use with the rotary cutter
Thread for piecing (white/cream/light grey works fine)
Full bobbin ready to go
Thread snips
Fabric (see requirements on bottom of page)
*Ironing mat and travel iron

* - you will be doing cutting and pressing a lot, so having these tools at your station will make it much easier to accomplish. If coming with a friend, you can share the pressing mat/iron.
FABRIC REQUIREMENTS
Using a layer cake:
-(1) layer cake of 42 squares
-3/8 yard for inner border (6 strips @ 2” wide)
-Scrappy outer border (sewn 2” wide strips together)
-Brown scraps at least 2 ½” tall (need enough to make 42 trunks)
-Binding: ½ yd (6 strips cut 2 ¼ “ wide)
-Backing: (reg fabric width) 3 1/3 yards (wide backing) 1 ¾ yds
-Batting: 1 ¾ yds
Using scrap fabric:
-42 10” squares of various winter blue and cream prints
-Brown scraps at least 2 ½” tall (need enough to make 42 trunks)
-Binding: ½ yd (6 strips cut 2 ¼” wide)
-Backing: (reg fabric width) 3 yds (wide backing) 1 ½ yds
-Batting: 1 ½ yds
Using fat quarters:
-11 (or more) different fat quarters – each FQ = 4 blocks)
-Brown scraps at least 2 ½” tall (need enough to make 42 trunks)
-Remainder of fabric/batting/backing needs based on finished size quilt
(The classic colors of Christmas quilt was made using 9”x11” scraps of
fabric. This quilt could also be made by using fat quarters of a large
variety of prints. When cutting the fat quarters, you would only be able to
get 9” x 10 ½” cuts (4 per fat quarter), making the height of your block
smaller, but close enough to have the same impact!)
